Terms of use

Plain language, because there is no legal department behind this. If something here reads as though it were written by one, it is a mistake — tell the operator and it gets rewritten.

Tandem is self-hosted software. There is no company, no service, and no "Tandem account" in a central sense: there is only an account on the particular server you were given the address of, run by a person — the operator — on hardware they own. These terms are the agreement between you and that operator. Whoever wrote the software is not a party to it.

The service is personal and best-effort

The server is run as a personal project. It is not a product and nobody is on call for it.

  • No warranty of any kind. The software and the service are provided as-is. See LICENSE for the software's own warranty disclaimer.
  • No uptime guarantee. The server may be down, slow, restarted mid-chapter, moved, rebuilt or switched off for good, with or without notice.
  • No guarantee your data survives. Backups exist (backup-restore.md) but are not promised to you, and a restore can lose recent reading positions. Nothing here is a contract to keep anything.

Upload only content you are entitled to hold

You may put a file on this server only if you are legally entitled to hold a copy of it. That covers books you bought, books you borrowed under a licence that lets you keep a local copy, and material that is in the public domain or that you wrote yourself.

This applies in full to the DRM-related import paths — the ACSM (Adobe) and Audible pipelines described in import-sources.md. Those exist so that you can read your own purchases on your own hardware. Do not use them, or this server, on files you do not have the right to hold, and do not redistribute anything you upload here to anyone else.

The operator can remove any file, at any time, without asking first.

Accounts

Registration may be open, but an account has to be approved by the operator before it works, and approval is entirely at their discretion.

The operator may remove your account and its data at any time, for any reason or none — including because the server is being shut down. There is no appeal, no notice period and no export guarantee. In exchange, you can leave the same way: ask the operator to delete your account, or use the in-app deletion control if the server you are on has one.

Do not attempt to reach other users' accounts or data, and do not try to break, overload or work around the server's limits.

Your data

What is stored, why, and for how long is described in the privacy policy — privacy.md. Where these terms and that document overlap, the privacy policy is the more specific one and wins.

Changes

These terms can change. The current version is whatever is published at /terms on the server you use, and continuing to use the account means the current version applies. There is no notification mechanism.
