Tandem

Read a book, listen to the audiobook, and keep one place in both.

Tandem transcribes your audiobook, aligns it to the ebook, and syncs your position between reading and listening — on the web and on Android. Stop reading on the train, carry on listening in the car, from the same sentence.

It is a client for a server you run

Tandem is not a bookstore or a subscription. There is no Tandem account, and no books are supplied. You run the server, on your own machine, holding your own files. The apps connect to it.

That is why the app asks for a server address before it asks for anything else.

What it does

  • Position sync both ways. Chapter and sentence are the anchor, so where you stopped reading is where the audiobook resumes — and the reverse.
  • Transcription on your own hardware. Whisper runs on the server, or on a separate machine. Nothing goes to a transcription service.
  • Your library, your formats. EPUB ebooks and the common audiobook formats, matched automatically by title, author and series.
  • Android and web. Offline downloads, a background player, Cast and Android Auto on the phone; a full reader in the browser.

Try it

A public demo server holds a handful of public-domain books from Project Gutenberg and LibriVox, each with reading and listening in sync:

  • Address: https://demo.tandembook.com
  • Username: demo
  • Password: tandemdemo

The demo account can read and listen. It cannot change the library.

Run your own

The server is free software and the setup is documented in the repository: github.com/jlafuenti/Book-Sync.

Privacy, terms and licence

  • Privacy policy — what leaves your device, and who holds it. Short version: your reading data goes to your server and nowhere else.
  • Account deletion — how to delete an account and its data.
  • Terms of use — for anyone running a server others sign in to.
  • Licence — AGPL-3.0-only.
